Dear Families,
THANK YOU for coming to conferences. I truly appreciated the chance to meet with you. I hope you found it worthwhile. As we move into December, our days will be busy.
Math
I’m trying to send home completed math sheets as I’m finished with them, or copies if I need to save the originals. The only ones I can’t send until the end of the year are the Power Standards tests I showed you at conference. If students bring home work to finish, they should know what to do and why. If they need help, feel free. If they are confused, they should do their best and then ask me the next day.
If you have any questions about the math that comes home, please ask your child. I hope they know what we’re doing and why. If not, I’m happy to explain.
Book Orders
Now that the Book Fair is done, I’ll start sending book orders again. If you’re ordering something for a present and want me to keep it a secret, just let me know.
Reading
Books make great Christmas presents. So do magazine subscriptions. I urge you to continue reading aloud to your children. This tends to diminish in families as the kids reach third grade and beyond, but the benefits remain huge, more than I can explain here.
Celebration
We’ll have our year-end celebration on Wednesday, December 21st. I’ll give you more details soon. Thank you to those who have offered to help.
Concert
Our concert for 3, 4, and 5 will be on Thursday, December 15 at 6:30pm. Kids should arrive at my classroom about 6:20 and the whole class will walk down together. Many people often get here earlier than that for seats and parking (and just walk the students up to the classroom at 6:20), since the place will be packed. After the show, teachers take students back to the classroom, and families pick them up there.

Newsletter 6/Reminder
Newsletter 6 11/16/2011
Dear Families,
Just a reminder: We’ll have half days from now until Thanksgiving. I have conference times scheduled for everyone. Most people brought their slips back. Let me know if you need a reminder of your time.
I plan for the conferences to last about 20 minutes. I need to make sure we’re on time (not always easy for me J) because the families with more than one child here will have them back to back. If we need more time to talk, I’m happy to continue at a later time.
Please remember to bring the students with you. It’s their chance to celebrate progress with us. I’m looking forward to it.

Newsletter 5, 2011-2012
Dear Families,
Here are some quick updates:
Harvest Party
We will be doing something low key things from 11:30-12:30 on Friday, October 27. (It's already a busy day, with an assembly, a lesson with our counselor, and a math test!)
I think we will have enough food, but if you want to send in something, that's great. We'll either have it for the party, or save it for snack. If you have any smaller food items we could use as markers on a BINGO board, that's one thing I think we still need.
We could use some supplies, like plates, silverware and napkins, if anyone could send those.
If students want to bring costumes to wear for that hour, they may. No masks, weapons, blood, etc.
If you want to be here, that's great. I would appreciate knowing in advance, but if you're able to just show up, that's fine, too.
Math
We're finishing a geometry unit. There are a lot of math words and terms covered in this unit, as you've seen if you follow us on Twitter.
Reading
We've been learning about cause and effect, and how to recognize those things in a story. It will help them to understand stories, and how to write better stories.
Writing
We have written expository pieces to explain some of the items in our jackdaws. We have written to answer the question: What Is an American? Now we're learning how to write personal narratives, beginning with lists of things in our lives that are typical and unusual.
Volunteers
Please let me know if you'd like to volunteer to help us—we'd love to have you. I can think of 3 ways: in class; special events in class, like parties; field trips. In all cases we need paperwork filled out in advance. Please turn it in a month or more in advance, so there is sufficient time to check references, etc. You can find information and forms here: http://www.enumclaw.wednet.edu/families/volunteers.aspx .
One current need is people to help plan/coordinate parties. Please let me know if you can help with this. The next one will be in December.
Conferences
I'd love to meet with everyone for a conference. A sheet with conference times came home recently. Please send those back ASAP to help me plan times that will work for you to be here and bring your child. I structure the conference with the intent of the students being here, to celebrate progress and talk about next steps.
On last count, I had email addresses for 14 families so far. If you haven't sent yours, please do. If you think you did, but you aren't getting newsletters over email, please email me.
