Newsletter 5 2012-2013 12/4/2012
Dear Families,
Thank you to everyone for coming to conferences. Literally, this year, I got to do a conference with every single family. I appreciate that.
Christmas Concert
Our Winter Holiday Concert for 3rd, 4th, and 5th will be Thursday, December 13 at 6:30pm. The PTA is accepting donations for the bake sale they have at this time every year, too.
Please drop off the students in our classroom at 6:20; and the whole class will walk down together. Many people often get here earlier than that for seats and parking (and just walk the students up to the classroom at 6:20), since the place will be packed.
After the show, teachers take students back to the classroom, and families pick them up there.
Celebration
We’ll have our year-end celebration on Wednesday, December 19th, which will be a holiday breakfast together in the classroom. We’ll start around 9:15.
For the breakfast, we’ll need families to contribute supplies, and volunteers to help here at school. We’d like to have toast decorated with food coloring, sausages, fruit for kabobs (bananas, apples, grapes, oranges), and something to drink.
Renee Hopkins has (again) volunteered to coordinate supplies. If you can help out by volunteering or bringing in any supplies please contact her.
We’ll need plates, napkins, plastic silverware, toasters, white bread, food coloring, cut fruit, sausages (either cooked at home and reheated here, or cooked here in electric skillets), something to spread on the bread like butter or jam, and juice boxes or pouches. No peanuts, please.
Math
The current unit teaches/reviews (among other things) rounding and money. I’ve talked about how these are two skills they will use forever. It would be helpful if you pointed out at home some ways they could use these skills, and especially helpful if there are some coins they can practice counting at home. I think that’s probably the best way to learn money (and time).

Ornaments
The ornaments we made this year are pipe cleaners, covered by crystalized borax powder. It’s the same stuff people use for laundry and other cleaning. Some kids have remarked that it looks edible, but it most certainly is not. It’s just for decoration. As part of that project, we also did a science investigation into some things that dissolve in water.
